Links and All things Numismatic

Updated: Sep 26, 2024

I spend a LOT of time on this here World Wide Web and I run across a lot of interesting and sometimes even helpful and useful info. So check back to this thread from time to time because i will continue to add as I find.

American Numismatic Association Or known in the Numismatic World as simply the ANA

Coin GRADING and Authentication Companies

ANACS

Originally founded in June 1972 as the American Numismatic Association's authentication service, ANACS expanded into third-party coin grading in March 1979. ANACS was founded in response to the rise in counterfeit and altered coins in the marketplace.

ANACS is the official coin grading service of the ANA

PCGS

PCGS revolutionized the Rare Coin industry by giving some sense of security to collectors by grading and encapsulating rare coins, although it had been a false sense in some instances. Don't get me wrong, they are by far the biggest coin grading company in the world, and they get it right far more often than they get it wrong. I prefer PCGS most of the time, and I beleive that for higher grade coins and more expensive coins they are just easier to sell.

I absolutely love this site! Of course, PCGS is the one of the largest and one of the most respected numismatic grading companies in the entire world. One of its founders is David Hall and if you have been around the hobby for awhile that is not a new name to you. This is where you can get prices for PCGS slabbed coins and all kinds of other info. One of my favorite things to do on the site is look at the pics of the Finest known categories so don't forget to CHECK THEM OUT!

Wiki "Established in 1985 by a group of seven dealers, which included David Hall, the former president of the firm, PCGS aimed to create authoritative grading standards with a firm commitment to ensuring the accuracy of grading through guarantees. PCGS began operations on February 3, 1986. The firm has since started grading foreign coins and established divisions in Europe and Asia, and was purchased by Collectors Universe.

NGC

NGC completes the Top 3 Coin Grading Services I have NGC graded coins and they are also well respected in the World of Numismatics.

For a little history on NGC

Keep in mind that You can have a coin graded by ANY service and 6 months later it can have a "problem" or spot pop up even though it is encapsulated.

Just lots of Great Info!

I have always been bullish on the metals, and I have always thought that one should have at least 10% of their portfolio in metals. I also think Silver seriously undervalued at this time and has much more upside than Gold! I believe that the US Govt has suppressed the metal prices for decades, but if you watch around the world many countries have been stock piling Gold recently and they won't be able to do so forever. Silver has so much industrial demand and we are mining at deficits over the last two years so it can only go up over time and it may not be long before it sees substantial gains.

Got any "Junk Silver" laying around and wonder what they are worth? Here is an excellent resource to get a ballpark of what your old gold or silver coins are worth. Remember though, this is just the "spot" price of what the metal in each coin is worth.

The United States Mints Official Website

There is already a link to PCGS above but this is direct to their "Photograde" page and you can just click on your favorite coin and give it a grade...Please remember that coin grading is still very subjective and one man's 63 could very well be another man's MS64 or even MS65. To prove that point, You can literally send the same coin to PCGS and then crack it out and send it to NGC or Anacs and get completely different grades from each of them.
